DISCLAIMER: The SAGES CVS Challenge took place at MICCAI 2024 in Marrakech and is no longer open for submissions - stay tuned for the CVS Lighthouse Challenge at MICCAI 2025! The SAGES CVS Challenge dataset is currently not publicly available. Any use of the dataset outside the official MICCAI challenge is strictly prohibited. Participants have agreed not to publish the data or any methods developed using the data until the final challenge manuscript has been released by the organizers.
The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) is hosting its first-ever biomedical data challenge at MICCAI 2024 in Marrakesh: The SAGES CVS Challenge aims to lay the foundation for assessing safety standards in surgery using Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a standardized surgical operation for gallbladder removal, is one of the most frequently performed minimally invasive procedures worldwide. The Critical View of Safety (CVS) is an internationally recognized, clinically validated step in laparoscopic cholecystectomy to prevent significant complications (common bile duct injuries). The SAGES CVS Challenge aims to assess the achievement of the CVS through AI to provide surgeons with an automated second opinion, decrease their cognitive workload, and improve documentation standards, among other applications.
For this purpose, we have assembled a diverse dataset of 1000 laparoscopic cholecystectomy videos through contributions from over 50 countries, reflecting a vast array of clinical and technical attributes. The data has been meticulously annotated by a diverse team of annotators who underwent quality-controlled training on consensus-based ground truth. Using these annotations, as well as secondary clinical and demographic information (e.g. intraoperative use of augmented imaging, annotation confidence etc.), we will evaluate submissions in terms of absolute performance, uncertainty awareness, and robustness to distribution shifts.
Find out how to become involved beyond challenge participation and check out our official CVS Challenge website for more general information about the initiative! Please also free to contact info@cvschallenge.org regarding any questions about participating in the CVS Challenge, CVS data donation, and annotation. The SAGES CVS Challenge encourages researchers worldwide to compete in developing reliable, trustworthy, and clinically meaningful AI capable of enhancing surgical safety in laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.
